For 32 years, that brass fob just hung in my kitchen cabinet

Nobody had forged anything. Then I looked at the bottom of the page and 31 years of my life stood up. Every institutional form has a footer. Bottom left six point type and it tells you which version of the form you are holding. The transfer application read form MTA2 Reverend Da03 Juan 2025.

The attached signature page read form SACE1 Revenue 6209 page two of two. And under my signature in the date line in my own handwriting in my own blue pen. October 2nd, 2023, a signature page from a different form from a different year stapled to an application printed on a revision that did not exist until March of 2025. I knew that date immediately. I did not have to look it up.

In the fall of 2023, the club levied a special assessment to re-roof the cassita row. $2,400 per certificate payable over 18 months. And each member had to sign a consent form, SACE1, special assessment consent. Monday, October 2nd, 2023. Denise and Doug were driving up for a long weekend.

So, I rode with them as far as the club to sign my form in person instead of mailing it and to see the new roof line and to have lunch. Gwen printed two copies. She always prints two. She said, “Sign both and I’ll file one and you keep one in case ours grows legs.” So, I signed twice. Two-page form twice.

My signature on four pieces of paper that day. I signed my copy at the counter and handed it to Denise to put in her tote bag with the rest of my things because I had a purse and a cane that week from a bad ankle and my daughter was carrying my paperwork. Nobody forged my name. They just moved it. That was enough to make me certain.

It was not enough to make anybody else certain. And there is a large difference between those two states and every single day of my working life happened inside that difference. A footer mismatch is an argument. Somebody would say the office pulled an old page by accident. Somebody would say I signed a blank and forgot.

Somebody would look at a 70-year-old woman and think, “Well, she does seem sharp, but I needed the club’s own record of what I signed that day. It was in box two. I had already paid for it and did not know.” The Juniper Mesa office keeps a counter intake log. A spiral book, one line per transaction, because Gwen has never trusted a computer to remember why somebody stood in front of her. Monday, October 2nd, 2023.

11:20 a.m. R. Chalmer’s SAC1 signed in office two copies. Witnessed G. Aly, one line, 11 words, and a name.

It says, I signed one kind of document that morning that there were two copies of it, and that the club’s own secretary stood there while I did it. It says there was no transfer form in that room in 2023 because the transfer form on that application did not exist until 2025. I asked Gwen about it on my way out. I did not tell her why. I just asked whether she still kept the counterbook.

She said, “I write down everything. It’s the only thing I’m good for.” She has said that for 30 years. I have never once agreed with the second half. I drove home with 214 pages in a banker’s box on my back seat. Now I had all of it.

The only question left was what a person does with it. A lawyer would have told me to send a demand letter, threaten a suit, and report a document irregularity to the county attorney. I did not want a case. I wanted a chair. So on Friday, September 25th, I called the club office and made a reservation.

Cassita 12, December 19th through the 26th, 2026, one occupant. That is the founding holiday week attached to certificate 0071. It is not a favor. The member of record does not need permission to occupy her own week and the office cannot decline it while the certificate is in her name. I read the number off the brass fob while Tori typed.

I have known that number since 1994. I did it because I wanted to be holding it. She said one occupant Mrs. Chalmer’s. I said one.

Then I did the other thing which was nothing at all. Thursday October 1st came and went. That is the deadline in article 6 section three. That is the day the designation of associate members has to be received at the club office in writing signed by the member of record for the following year. I did not mail it.

I did not send a letter forbidding anyone. I did not call the office and revoke anything. I did not tell a single human being what I had or had not done. I just did not sign. One quick thing before we get to December.

If you have ever been the family member who waits to be included, try this. Book the thing yourself in your own name and tell nobody. Not as revenge, as practice. Comment and tell me what you would book and subscribe because the front desk part is coming. 36 days later, Denise called.

Friday, November 6th, 2026, a little after 7 in the evening. She had not called me on a Friday night in years. She was warm. She asked about my hip. She told me a long story about why it’s basketball.

Then casually, the way you mentioned picking up milk. Oh, and there’s a thing I need you to sign. It’s one page, Mom. Just estate simplification. I asked her what the document was called.

There was a pause. Not long, but I have listened to a lot of pauses across a counter. It’s a club thing. Plet’s handling it. I asked her again what it was called.
