I finally packed two suitcases and left the house i built for 30 years

From what Julian told me later, Vanessa’s reaction to the new rules was explosive.

When he explained that I wasn’t coming back and they had to start paying monthly rent to live in my house, she flat out refused.

She screamed at him, demanded he figure out a legal loophole to keep the house for free, and accused him of failing to protect his family.

But Julian, for the first time in years, held his ground.

He patiently explained that she had absolutely no claim to the house because she had never contributed a single dime to the property.

He told her they were either paying the rent or moving to a much cheaper neighborhood so they could balance the books.

Vanessa couldn’t handle the downgrade.

Once she realized her fully subsidized lifestyle was officially dead and she’d actually have to sacrifice her luxuries to contribute financially, her true colors showed.

She didn’t want a marriage built on teamwork.

She wanted a free ride.

Barely three weeks after Julian’s visit to my cabin, she packed her bags and moved into an apartment of her own.

Julian called me the night she left.

His voice was exhausted, but I could hear a distinct note of relief under it all.

“She’s gone, Mom. It’s just me and the kids at the house. I’ll wire you the first rent payment tomorrow morning.”

I didn’t celebrate his family falling apart, but I did feel a deep, quiet satisfaction that my son had finally chosen to face reality instead of hiding behind my apron strings.

“I’ll check my account tomorrow, Julian,” I told him. “Make sure Hudson doesn’t leave his muddy cleats in the hallway. And don’t forget to clean the lint trap on the dryer.”

We had established a new world order.

He was finally the man of his own house, and I was at last the master of my own life.

The next few months were a massive adjustment period for all of us.

Julian had to completely overhaul his routine to balance his demanding job with being a single dad.

He hired a college student to help out for a couple of hours a day and actually learned how to grocery shop on a real budget.

There were times I could hear the stress in his voice over the phone, but he never once begged me to come rescue him.

He understood that chapter was permanently closed.

As for me, I used the monthly rental income to upgrade my cabin and cover my living expenses.
