My name is Lorraine, and this is the story of how I stopped being just another piece of furniture in my own home.
The silence in the car as I hit the highway was a sharp contrast to the constant chaos I’d gotten used to.
3 years ago, Julian had asked if he, Vanessa, and the kids could move in with me temporarily.
They had made some terrible financial choices, racking up crazy credit card debt on vacations they couldn’t afford.
He promised it would just be for a year so they could get back on their feet.
I said yes.
At first, Vanessa was an absolute sweetheart.
She’d bring home fresh flowers for the dining table and make Sunday morning pancakes.
But things went south quickly.
It didn’t take years to notice.
Within a few months, Vanessa started reorganizing my kitchen cabinets.
She boxed up my favorite china and stuck it in the garage because it clashed with the modern aesthetic.
When I asked her about it, she gave me this sweet, practiced smile and said she was just worried the kids would break it.
I didn’t argue.
I just went out to the garage, grabbed my china, and put it in my bedroom.
That was my first red flag.
But she totally missed the point.
Then came the responsibilities.
It started with them asking me to watch Hudson and Harper one afternoon a week.
Before I knew it, one afternoon turned into every single day after school.
When I finally put my foot down about being their personal chef and stopped cooking big family dinners, Vanessa didn’t apologize.
She just started ordering Door Dash every night, leaving me to clean up the mess.
Or she’d dump all the heavy-duty household chores on me, using the excuse that she worked all day.
I just watched it all happen.
