Daniel looked out the window, his expression carved from stone. “I lost my mother years ago, Emily. I just didn’t realize it until last night. The woman in that cellar wasn’t my mother—she was a ghost consumed by greed. I have no family left except the truth.”
Emily squeezed his hand tightly. “You’re not alone, Daniel. We finish this together.”
At 10:00 AM, the train pulled into Union Station, Washington D.C.
Waiting for them on the platform was a tall man in a dark grey suit, wearing aviator sunglasses, surrounded by four armed federal officers.
Special Agent Marcus Vance.
“You look like hell, cousin,” Marcus said, stepping forward and giving Daniel a brief, firm embrace.
“You have no idea,” Daniel replied weary. He turned to Emily. “Marcus, this is Emily Reed.”
Marcus turned to Emily, taking off his sunglasses. His eyes were kind, but sharp with professional intensity. He extended his hand. “It’s an honor to finally meet you, Miss Reed. Your father was a good man. My father always said Benjamin Reed was the only honest businessman in our city.”
Tears pricked Emily’s eyes. Hearing someone validate her father’s character after fifteen years of public disgrace felt like a cool rain on a parched desert.
“We have the evidence,” Emily said, opening her bag and presenting both the leather binder and the encrypted hard drive.
Marcus took the items, signaling to one of his agents, who placed them into a biohazard evidence pouch.
“We need to go directly to the Federal Courthouse,” Marcus said, motioning for them to follow him toward a fleet of black armored SUVs waiting outside the station. “Arthur Sterling just announced an emergency press conference at noon today. He’s formally announcing his candidacy for the Senate, and he’s using the event to announce the ‘merger’ of Sterling Enterprises and Vance Enterprises.”
Daniel froze. “A merger? My mother doesn’t have the authority to merge the companies without my vote as majority shareholder!”
“She filed a court petition three hours ago claiming you are ‘missing and incapacitated,'” Marcus explained grimly as they climbed into the back of the SUV. “She’s using your disappearance from the vault last night to seize emergency control of your shares. If the board approves the merger at noon, Sterling will absorb Vance Enterprises, legally sealing all historical financial records under corporate immunity.”
“They aren’t just trying to cover up the past,” Emily realized, her blood running cold. “They are trying to steal Daniel’s entire company before we can stop them!”
Marcus looked at his watch. 11:15 AM.
“We have forty-five minutes to present this evidence to a Federal Judge, secure an emergency injunction, and crash that press conference,” Marcus said, slamming his hand on the driver’s headrest. “Drive! Red lights don’t exist today!”
At 11:55 AM, the grand ballroom of the Capital Plaza Hotel was packed with hundreds of journalists, news cameras, political donors, and high-society elites.
On the grand stage, flanked by American flags and massive digital displays, stood Arthur Sterling. He wore a crisp blue suit, radiating confidence and power. To his right stood Margaret Vance, dressed in a sleek black dress, her face pale but fixed in a rigid smile. Beside her stood Vanessa, wearing a heavy layer of makeup to hide the bruises from the previous night, trying her best to look like a grieving, dignified heiress.
Arthur stepped up to the podium, flashing a polished smile for the flashing cameras.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur’s voice boomed through the speakers. “Today is a day of unity, progress, and strength. In light of recent tragic personal events, the Vance and Sterling families have decided to combine our visions. I am proud to announce the creation of the Sterling-Vance Global Consortium!”
The crowd applauded politely, camera flashes lighting up the room like lightning.
“Furthermore,” Arthur continued, leaning into the microphone, “we honor the memory of young Daniel Vance, who has tragically gone missing following a corporate crisis. We promise to carry his legacy forward—”
BANG!
The massive double doors at the back of the ballroom were thrown open so violently that the sound echoed like a cannon shot through the room.
The applause died instantly. Hundreds of heads turned toward the entrance.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the bright sunlight of the foyer, was Daniel Vance—alive, uninjured, wearing a sharp black suit.
Beside him stood Emily Reed, holding her head high, dressed in an elegant navy dress, her eyes shining with absolute fearless authority.
Behind them stood Special Agent Marcus Vance and a dozen armed Federal Marshals.
“The rumors of my death,” Daniel’s voice echoed powerfully across the silent room without the aid of a microphone, “have been greatly exaggerated.”
