My daughter-in-law called me a landlord at dinner, so i started acting like one

“Where’s the coffee?” he mumbled.

“Good morning, Nathan,” I replied without looking up from my screen. “The beans are in the pantry. You’ll need to make your own.”

He stared at me, blinking heavily.

“You didn’t make breakfast.”

“I made a slice of toast for myself.”

Before he could process this, Sarah marched into the kitchen, staring fiercely at her phone.

“Did the Wi-Fi go down? My phone isn’t connecting, and I have a video meeting in 20 minutes.”

“The Wi-Fi is fine.”

I took another sip of my coffee.

“I changed the password.”

Sarah stopped walking. She lowered her phone.

“What? Why would you do that? Give me the new password.”

“No.”

Nathan sighed, leaning against the counter.

“Mom, please don’t do this. We apologized for last night. Okay? Sarah was just trying to be funny.”

“I’m not doing anything.”

I set my mug down.

“Sarah made it clear. I am your landlord. Landlords provide a roof. They do not provide complimentary breakfast, barista services, or premium internet. You are welcome to set up your own router.”

Sarah glared at me.

“You cannot be serious right now.”

Sarah crossed her arms, her face turning a bright shade of red.

“I work from home. Valerie, I need that internet. Give me the password right now.”
