My family changed the locks on my house

I just wanted the court to affirm publicly and permanently that they had no legal right to my house.

The hearing was scheduled for 2 weeks out, but I didn’t tell them.

Let them stew.

Let them keep scrambling for backup plans they didn’t have.

Meanwhile, I started visiting the house again quietly.

At night, I’d park a block away, walk the familiar sidewalk, and just observe.

From the edge of the lawn, I could see that the flower beds were dead, the blinds were crooked, the porch light didn’t work.

They’d let it go in every sense of the word.

And it hit me.

Then, this wasn’t just a house.

They tried to steal.

They’d ruined it.

All the little improvements I’d made over the years, the solar panels, the rain gutters I installed, the handbuilt bench on the porch had been neglected or ripped out entirely.

Emily had replaced the paint in the living room with some hideous lavender shade that made the whole house look like a nursery.

I stood there staring through the front window like a stranger and realized that no matter how this ended, some things were already lost.

Still, I wasn’t about to let them win.

The next week, the final nail came from the bank.

Because the mortgage hadn’t been paid in over 30 days, a formal pre-forclosure notice was delivered, this time addressed directly to me.

The irony was that the house couldn’t be foreclosed without my permission because I still held the title and the mortgage.

But the notice was a warning.

Either pay the balance or default.

That’s when I got the email.

It was from the buyers, the couple who had tried to purchase the house months earlier.

They’d somehow tracked me down, probably through the court filings, and wanted to meet.

Apparently, they were still interested in buying if the title could be cleared.

They said they love the neighborhood, and if I was still the rightful owner, they were willing to renegotiate directly.

I smiled because now I had a way out.

If I could evict Emily and Mom through the court ruling, clean up the property, and sell it directly to this couple, I could finally be free.

No more entanglement, no more driving past a house that felt like a wound.

Just closure, clean, final, and legally airtight.
