“I heard about your Lake Tahoe property situation. Word travels fast in real estate circles.”
“I hope there aren’t any professional concerns.”
She smiled.
“Are you kidding? You identified an undervalued asset, moved quickly to acquire it, and managed the transition professionally. It’s exactly the kind of strategic thinking we want from our senior associates.”
“Senior associates?”
“We’ve been discussing your promotion. The Lake Tahoe portfolio acquisition put you over the top. Congratulations, senior property acquisition specialist Rodriguez. Your new salary starts Monday.”
As she walked away, I realized I was smiling for the first time in days.
Then my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.
“This is David from Alpine Lake Services. Thought you should know. We’ve had several calls from people claiming to be your family demanding access to the property. I explained that they’re on the restricted list. One young man became quite agitated and started shouting about family property rights and teaching lessons. I’ve documented everything and notified local law enforcement as a precaution. Your property is secure.”
I typed back:
“Thank you. Please maintain all current restrictions.”
Then I opened the vacation rental platform and looked at my new listing.
“Stunning Lake Tahoe cabin with private dock, professionally managed.”
The photos were gorgeous, the pricing was competitive, and according to the booking calendar, I already had three reservations for the upcoming month.
At lunch, I did something I hadn’t done in years. I posted on social media.
“Excited to announce my new investment property at Lake Tahoe. Beautiful cabin with private dock, professionally managed by Alpine Lake Services. Already booking for next season. Sometimes the best investments are the ones closest to home. #realestate #investment # Lake Tahoe #propy owner.”
I included one of the professional photos. The cabin looking pristine against the backdrop of the lake with the private dock stretching into crystal clear water.
Within an hour, the post had more likes than Marcus’ freeloader post had accumulated in 2 days. Colleagues, friends, and even some relatives were commenting with congratulations and asking about rental availability.
But the comment that made me smile came from my old college roommate, Sarah.
“Is this the same cabin where your family used to treat you like garbage? Plot twist of the century.”
I didn’t respond to her comment, but I did like it.
That evening, I drove up to Lake Tahoe to see the property in person. David met me there with the keys.
My keys now.
Walking through the cabin felt surreal. Every room held memories of feeling unwelcome, of being treated as less than. But now, standing in the living room where Marcus had blocked me from using the bathroom, I felt something different.
