My mom told me to cancel my wedding for my sister

I drove home and sat in my car in the cold parking lot outside my building for 11 minutes before I could make myself go inside.

I remember the number because I watched it on the dashboard clock.

9:52 to 10:03.

Engine off.

Breath bogging.

I opened the wedding planning app on my phone.

Guest list.

Brides family.

Mom, remove.

Vanessa, remove.

Dad.

I paused there.

My father had said nothing at that dinner. Not one word, which I’d spent years interpreting as neutrality.

I stopped believing in that neutrality.

Somewhere around tap number two.

Remove.

Three taps.

31 years.

Undone faster than it takes to order takeout.

Then I opened my email and wrote to Priya:

“Please update the guest list. These three individuals are no longer invited under any circumstances. Effective immediately.”

I hit send before I could talk myself out of it.

And then I sat there in the dark with my phone glowing in my lap, waiting to feel like a monster.

I didn’t.

That was almost the most disorienting part.

My phone rang the next morning at 9:14.

Pria’s name on the screen.

I assumed she was confirming the removal. A routine administrative click of a button.

“Claire,” she said, and something in how she said my name. Careful, like she was choosing each syllable, made my stomach drop before she’d finished a sentence.

“I want to make sure we’re on the same page about something. Your sister called us yesterday before your email came in.”

“She did what?”

“She said there was a family emergency. That your mother had been hospitalized and she needed to know our availability to move your date.”

I told myself for one full breath that there had to be an explanation.

Maybe Mom really had gone to urgent care for something minor and it got exaggerated in translation. Maybe this was a miscommunication stacked on a miscommunication.
