My mother-in-law kicked me out of my own house for new year’s

“Sandra, what about my family? My mother expects the house to be ready.”

“Your mother demanded a three-bedroom house for 10 people,” I said calmly. “You agreed to it. So, you can handle it. I am taking my personal vehicle, my personal money, and going on my vacation.”

“Wait, Sandra?”

Jordan panicked, following me down the stairs as I dragged my suitcase to the front entry.

“What about the keys? What about the food? She asked for she texted me this morning asking if the deep freezer was stocked with meat.”

I turned around at the front door, set my bag down, and looked at my husband with complete clarity.

“Jordan, I’m going to make something very clear to you,” I said in a measured, deliberate voice. “I own 65% of this home. I pay the majority of the bills. I am not a hotel manager and I am not your mother’s unpaid servant.”

“She wants to bring 10 people to this property that is between you and her, but I am shutting down my responsibilities starting right now.”

I grabbed my keys, walked out to my SUV, loaded my suitcase into the trunk, and drove away, leaving Jordan standing alone in the driveway looking completely overwhelmed.

What Jordan didn’t realize, and what Victoria certainly didn’t expect, was the extent to which I maintained and managed our entire household infrastructure.

Cuz I was a software architect who built automated systems for a living, our home was entirely integrated into a high-end smart home ecosystem that I had personally purchased, installed, and programmed.

The digital front door deadbolts, the smart thermostat zones, the security cameras, the automated water shut off valves, and even the garage door openers were all wired directly through a centralized hub app installed exclusively on my personal smartphone and linked to my private credit card account.

Furthermore, every year before I went on an extended trip, I performed a routine home maintenance winterization.

When I left the house on Tuesday afternoon, I logged into my home utility portal and scheduled a routine system maintenance upgrade for the holiday weekend.

I also called our local residential security and automation provider to update our property profile.

By Wednesday evening, I had arrived at my oceanfront cabin 2 hours up the coast.

Place was stunning.

A quiet woodbeammed retreat with a hot tub on the deck overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. A roaring fireplace and complete uninterrupted silence.
