mrs ramos straightened
“absolutely not”
then she pointed toward the hallway
“but you should check the unit”
we walked down the hall and i felt like every step was a countdown
when we reached 3c i saw it immediately
fresh scratches around the lock
someone had tried to force it
my hands started shaking
emma pressed her palm against my back
“breathe,” she whispered
“we’re here”
and then we heard a sound from inside
not a voice
not crying
just movement
soft and careful
like someone shifting weight
“julie,” emma breathed
“call”
so i did
and while we waited in that hallway i stared at the door to my father’s old life and realized maria wasn’t just trying to win in court
she was trying to get access
because access is how she survived
and she didn’t care who she had to step on to get it
when the building security arrived they unlocked the door and we stepped inside
and there she was
maria
standing in the living room with a cardboard box in her arms like she belonged there
olivia wasn’t with her this time
maria smiled slowly
“julie,” she said
“i knew you’d come”
“get out,” i said
“now”
maria’s eyes flicked to my belly again and her smile sharpened
“you should be careful,” she said
“stress isn’t good for the baby”
emma moved between us
“you are trespassing,” she said
maria laughed
“this apartment was paul’s before he died,” she said
“family property returns to family”
“it was never paul’s,” i said
and her expression flickered
just for a second
because she didn’t know that part
“it was my father’s lease,” i continued
“and it’s been terminated since he moved out”
maria’s jaw tightened
“you’re lying”
mrs ramos stepped in behind the security guard
“she’s not,” she said
“mrs walker you have ten minutes to leave before i press charges”
maria’s face flushed
“you can’t do this”
“watch me,” mrs ramos said
maria looked around like she was searching for a weakness
then she did something i didn’t expect
she dropped the box on the floor and stepped toward me
“you think you won,” she hissed
“you think a piece of paper protects you”
emma’s hand shot out and she grabbed my arm pulling me back
“don’t touch her,” she snapped
maria froze
her eyes met mine
“this baby won’t save you,” she whispered
“it will only make you easier to ruin”
and then she turned and walked out with her shoulders stiff like she was holding herself together by sheer spite
when the door shut behind her i realized i was shaking so hard i could barely stand
mrs ramos touched my shoulder
“you okay mija”
“i will be,” i said
and for the first time i believed it
The second twist
two days later mr thompson called me
“julie,” he said
“there’s an update”
my stomach tightened
“about maria”
“about paul,” he corrected
“and about something he did that you didn’t know”
my heart stuttered
“what”
“he transferred the title of his truck and his retirement account into a beneficiary structure that bypasses probate,” mr thompson said
“it’s called a transfer on death designation”
“what does that mean”
“it means maria can’t touch it even if she screams into the sky,” he said
“it goes directly to you”
my eyes filled
“paul did that”
“yes,” he said
“and there’s more”
he paused
“he left instructions for a safety deposit box”
“where”
“first federal bank downtown,” he said
“he paid for it for two years”
emma was sitting beside me on the couch and her eyes widened
