When I turned 25 6 months ago, the trust automatically dissolved and the title deed of the four-bedroom Austin home was officially transferred to Alicia Gibson.
Instead of immediately throwing my father, stepmother, and halfsister out on the street, I tried to be reasonable.
I knew my father was struggling financially, so I allowed them to continue living in the home rentree, provided they covered the basic property taxes, utility bills, and routine maintenance.
I occupied the large master suite on the second floor, a room my biological mother had designed, while Brenda, Richard, and Vanessa occupied the remaining bedrooms.
However, my restraint was mistaken for weakness.
Brenda grew increasingly bitter, watching my career flourish. She hated seeing me return home from work in tailored clothes, driving a clean sedan I had bought with my own money, while her daughter Vanessa, now 18, spent her days skipping community college classes, throwing messy parties, and demanding expensive gifts.
The tension reached its boiling point during a Saturday evening family dinner.
Vanessa had decided she wanted to start making social media videos and needed a large aesthetic space with natural lighting to set up a permanent filming studio.
Rather than converting the underutilized guest room or organizing her own clutter, Vanessa demanded my master suite, which featured floor toseeiling windows and a private balcony overlooking the garden.
Brenda brought it up right after serving dinner.
“Alicia, Vanessa needs your bedroom for her content studio,” Brenda said casually, as if asking me to pass the salt. “You’ll move your things into the small basement guest room by tomorrow morning.”
I set my fork down, looking directly at my stepmother.
“No, Brenda. The basement room has no ventilation and serves as my home office. I am not moving out of my bedroom so Vanessa can film videos.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes, slamming her glass down.
