Vaughn placed documents on the table.
“Seven months ago, you consolidated business debt and residential obligations through a private lender.”
Thatcher’s posture changed.
Greer looked annoyed.
Sutton glanced at her brother.
Vaughn continued.
“The current exposure is approximately $2.4 million.”
“We know what we borrowed,” Sutton said.
“Excellent.”
Vaughn looked toward me.
“Then this will be easier.”
I spoke for the first time.
“The investment entity holding that debt is mine.”
Nobody moved.
Thatcher stared at me.
“What?”
“You borrowed from a secondary lender. My investment structure later acquired the portfolio.”
Sutton laughed once.
It sounded forced.
“You’re lying.”
I did not answer.
Vaughn slid verification documents across the table.
Thatcher read the first page.
Then the second.
His shoulders dropped.
Sutton leaned over.
Greer reached for the papers.
“This is ridiculous.”
Vaughn said, “No. It is documented.”
I watched Thatcher finally understand something he had never bothered to learn while we were married.
I had never needed his family financially.
They had simply assumed I did because I never displayed what I earned.
Sutton stood.
“You bought our debt just to threaten us?”
“No.”
I kept my voice level.
“The investment was made months ago.”
“You planned this.”
“I planned nothing that happened Sunday.”
She stopped.
Vaughn opened another file.
“The medical incident, however, creates several issues that may affect your business relationships, litigation exposure and the enforcement options available to the creditor.”
Greer pushed her chair back.
“You people are trying to ruin this family.”
“No,” I said. “Your family made decisions.”
Then Vaughn played the video.
The room changed.
Sutton saw herself stepping onto the pacing device.
Greer heard her own voice.
Thatcher heard his own laughter.
No one argued while it played.
When the screen went dark, Sutton spoke first.
“It looks worse than it was.”
Vaughn stared at her.
“The patient was hospitalized.”
“I didn’t think—”
“That is apparent.”
Greer turned on Thatcher.
“Why were you recording?”
