We sold your lake house yesterday

So I keep the house, and I keep the boundaries, and I keep the door open. Claire visits, and asks before she acts. Brad visits, and brings tools instead of plans. Daniel visits, and brings photographs of dawn over water, and stories of roads far away, and the quiet satisfaction of a man who protected his family without needing to be thanked for it in public. My grandson visits, and falls asleep on the porch swing, and wakes to ask for lemonade, and for another ride in the boat, and for the story of how his grandmother once stood in her kitchen, looked at a folder full of other people’s decisions, smiled, and said, simply, that they had forgotten something important. I tell him the story, in full, because children deserve true stories, told slowly, with all the hard parts included, so that when their own hard morning comes, they will know what to do: pause, ask, listen, hold the line, and hold each other, at the same time.
